"World renown bird and fish fingerling wetland habitat seriously threatened"
Townsville region's highest priority conservation of biodiversity task"

Three of Australia's seven worst environmental weeds (Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra) will seriously devalue the region's highest priority and most threatened wild asset, our wetlands.

To retain the wild asset value of unaffected (or lightly infected) Townsville region wetlands for decades monitor twice/year (four/year) for three readily identifiable weeds. If found spray immediately. If fed by permanently damp, lightly infected creeks consider treating those too. A clearly proven eradication strategy is attached.

A comparison between grassy weed infestations and healthy wetlands.
Project: to eradicate three rapidly expanding weeds from lightly affected wetlands and permanently damp creeks in this region, whether on private land or not. Image: Plantation/Ocean Creeks, Ayr, assistance by Les Searle (Burdekin Landcare).

Small outbreak eradication is quite simple and quick. However quality spraying contractors are strongly recommended because of requirements for: careful inspection, minimising wetland contamination and strict repeat spray timing.

Sidestep bureaucracy, get emergency funds and go. These weeds spread very rapidly. Bureaucracy: competing interest groups, committees, inadequate knowledge, fragmented private and public land, quality and busy land managers but wild asset protection is peripheral, government introduced weeds, conflicting grazing interests, environmental herbicide concerns, assuming weeds cannot be killed.

Queensland Nickel Ltd. (QNI) 's 1.8 km Saunder's Beach natural lagoon could have avoid serious degradation by spraying 18 small Hymenachne (Hymenachne amplexicaulis) occurrences, a total sprayed area equal to around one house-block. Once eradicated, avoid reinfection with twice yearly follow-ups. (noted in 2001)
